Декорации: вешалка, на которой висит пальто; имитация стены, на которой висит несколько картин; шесть стульев.
Действие происходит в одной комнате.
Дядюшка Поджер, одетый в пальто, появляется с
одной стороны. С другой – ему навстречу идёт
тётушка Мария.
Aunt Maria: Where have you been?
Uncle Podger: I’ve strolled around the garden for half an hour. The weather is fine and there’s no wind at all though it’s only the end of March.
Aunt Maria: Oh, yes! It’s really pleasant today. They say March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb. (Небольшая пауза) And what are you going to do this afternoon? What about visiting my mother? We haven’t seen her for ages!
Uncle Podger: It’s a pity. I have to stay at home and wait for…
Раздается стук в дверь.
Aunt Maria: Who’s that?
Посыльный отвечает за кулисами.
Deliveryman: It’s a deliveryman. I’ve brought a picture which was bought yesterday.
Uncle Podger: At last! I’ve been waiting for it since early morning!
Тетушка Мария уходит и возвращается с картиной.
Aunt Maria: Here it is. What’s kind of picture is it?
Uncle Podger: It’s a wonderful landscape.
Aunt Maria: It is necessary to call in a special man to put the picture up.
Uncle Podger: Oh, leave that to me.
Aunt Maria: I don’t think you will be able to hang it on the wall.
Uncle Podger: Why call somebody into the house when I can do the job very well alone!
Aunt Maria: You don’t say so!
Uncle Podger: I will do everything myself. Don’t trouble about it. It won’t take me more than fifteen minutes. What’s the time? Note it!
Aunt Maria: It’s half past twelve.
Uncle Podger: Well, let’s begin. What do I need? Let me see… Tom! Will! Is anybody in the house to help me?
Дядюшка Поджер задумчиво ходит по сцене.
Uncle Podger: Ann! Jim! Where is everyone? Is the house empty?
Ann: I’m right here! What’s the matter?
Uncle Podger: Go to the shop to buy some nails.
Дядюшка Поджер снимает с вешалки пальто, достаёт деньги из кармана, даёт Анне и кладёт пальто на стул.
Ann: I’ll be back in a moment.
Анна убегает. Появляются Вилл и Том.
Will: What has happened, Uncle?
Tom: I’ve come, Uncle!
Uncle Podger: Now you go and get me my hammer, Will; and you, Tom, bring me a ruler and a marker pen.
Вилл и Том уходят. Появляется Джим.
Jim: Can I help you?
Uncle Podger: I didn’t tell Ann what size to buy. Follow her and buy nails we need, Jim.
Джим бежит за Анной. Вилл приносит молоток.
Uncle Podger: I shall want the ladder, Will.
Вилл уходит за лестницей. Появляется Том с линейкой и маркером. Тётушка Мария собирается уходить.
Uncle Podger: And don’t go away, Maria, because I shall want somebody to hold the light; Tom, come here; I shall want you to hand me up the picture.
Вилл приносит лестницу, тётушка Мария – лампу.
Will: Here is the ladder.
Aunt Maria: Here is the lamp.
Тётушка Мария держит лампу, дядюшка Поджер встаёт на лестницу и делает отметку на стене.
Uncle Podger: That’s that!
Входят Анна и Джим.
Ann: Here are the nails.
Uncle Podger: Thanks. But you must go out again for some cord.
Анна убегает. Дядюшка берёт молоток, пытается забить гвоздь. Гвоздь падает.
Uncle Podger: There! The nail is gone!
Все в комнате встают на колени и начинают искать гвоздь.
Uncle Podger: Will you keep me here all the day?
Дядюшка слезает с лестницы, кладёт молоток на пол, ищет гвоздь и сдвигает лестницу с места (в сторону от отметки).
Tom: I’ve found it. Here it is!
Отдаёт гвоздь дяде. Дядя встаёт на лестницу.
Uncle Podger: Where is the hammer? What did I do with the hammer?
Все пожимают плечами в недоумении. Ходят по сцене, ищут молоток.
Will: The hammer seems to have disappeared!
Uncle Podger: Four of you and you don’t know what I did with the hammer!
Jim: Here it is! Here it is!
Uncle Podger: Now everything is okay and I’m ready to pound the nail.
Смотрит на стену, не может найти отметку. Возвращается Анна.
Uncle Podger: H’m! I’ve lost the mark which I made on the wall for the nail!
Том, Анна, Джим и Вилл по очереди встают на лестницу, пытаются найти отметку, но не находят.
Tom: Let me try. …… I’m not able to find it! Can’t someone else try?
Ann: Let me do it! …… No, I don’t see anything!
Will: I’ll try to find it! …… But I see nothing!
Jim: May I find the mark? …… There’s nothing on the wall! I’m sure someone has rubbed it off!
Aunt Maria: There it is! The ladder has been moved! You wanted to find the mark where it wasn’t.
Uncle Podger: There was no need to move the ladder. You all always do something that isn’t needed! What stupid fools you are!
Спускается, передвигает лестницу и поднимается вновь.
Aunt Maria: All right! All right! There’s no need to lose your temper.
Uncle Podger: Okay! Keep calm, Podger! Let’s do it again! Here is the hammer. Here is the nail. Here is the mark.
Дядюшка Поджер собирается забить гвоздь, ударяет себе по пальцу и ранит его, на пальце появляется кровь. Он бросает молоток, который падает Джиму на ногу.
Jim: Damn! Could anyone bring some ice?!
Тётушка Мария убегает и возвращается со льдом для Джима. Дядя спускается с лестницы, стонет от боли. Садится на стул, на котором лежит его пальто и кричит.
Uncle Podger: Give me some plaster to cover the wound.
Ann: Where can I find it?
Uncle Podger: It’s in the inner pocket of my coat.
Ann: But where is your coat, Uncle?
Uncle Podger: It must be in the wardrobe!
Том убегает со сцены, возвращается, разводит руками.
Tom: Your coat isn’t in the wardrobe!
Uncle Podger: Then it must be on the hanger.
Will: There is nothing on the hanger!
Uncle Podger: Doesn’t anybody in the whole house know where my coat is?
Aunt Maria: It isn’t anywhere!
Uncle Podger: Five of you and no one can find the coat that I put down five minutes ago!
Ann: It was here five minutes ago and it has just disappeared!
Aunt Maria: Things in our house are disappearing all the time! Isn’t it a magic trick?
Дядюшка встает со стула и обнаруживает, что он сидел на пальто.
Uncle Podger: Oh, I have found it myself now. You can never find anything, you fools!
Aunt Maria: That’s enough for me! Next time you undertake to do a job I’ll go and spend a week with my mother!
Дядюшка заклеивает пораненный палец пластырем, потом встает на лестницу. Вилл держит молоток; Джим – гвоздь; тетушка Мария – лампу; Том и Анна крепят шпагат к картине.
Uncle Podger: All good things come in threes! Give me the hammer, please. Give me the nail, please.
Aunt Maria: I hope the third attempt will be successful.
Дядюшка ударяет молотком, и гвоздь попадает как раз в отметку.
Uncle Podger: And that’s that! Give me the picture.
Дядюшка вешает картину. Слезает с лестницы. Отходит на небольшое расстояние и любуется картиной.
Uncle Podger: There you are!
Тетушка Мария, Анна, Том, Вилл и Джим с облегчением опускаются на стулья и принимают расслабленные позы.
Ann, Tom, Will, Jim (вместе): The picture is up at last!
Aunt Maria: The picture is up at last! (с иронией) Uncle Podger has done everything himself! And it didn’t take him more than fifteen minutes! It’s half past five.
Uncle Podger: Oh, you women! You have no patience! Why, I like doing a little job of this sort.
Дядюшка Поджер с облегчением вздыхает и опускается на стул.
Uncle Podger: Whew! I shall be glad to sit down. (выдерживает небольшую паузу) Why do other people call in a special man to do a little thing like that!
