It was New Year at the court of King Arthur. The King, the Queen and all the knights of the Round Table were celebrating. Suddenly the door opened and everybody turned round. A knight rode into a room on a magnificent horse. The knight and the horse were completely green!
The strange green knight got off his horse and spoke. “I know that King Arthur and his knights are famous for their bravery. I have come to test their bravery with a little game. Here is my axe. One of your brave knights must try to cut off my head. But, next year, on the same day, I will try to do the same to that knight.”
A brave and honest knight, Sir Gawain, stood up and said: “I will do it.” With no hesitation, he took the axe and cut off the Green Knight’s head. Then the strangest thing happened. The Green Knight picked up his head, got on his horse and left the room!
Ten months later, Sir Gawain went off to find the Green Knight. He came to a magnificent castle. The lord of the castle invited him to stay for the New Year. Sir Gawain and the lord made an agreement. They agreed to give each other anything they received.
The next day, the lord of the castle went out hunting. Sir Gawain stayed in bed. Suddenly, the lady of the castle, the lord’s wife, came into his room. She was beautiful. She kissed Sir Gawain and then left. When the lord of the castle returned, he gave Sir Gawain a deer he had caught. Sir Gawain gave the lord a kiss.
The next day the same thing happened. On the third day, the lady of the castle kissed Sir Gawain and then gave him a special belt. She said it would save his life. Sir Gawain did not give the belt to the lord of the castle because he thought it might be useful when he went to see the Green Knight.
On New Year’s Day, Sir Gawain went to meet the Green Knight. As they had agreed, the Green Knight took the axe. He was going to cut off Sir Gawain’s head, when suddenly he stopped. He tried the second time, but stopped again. The third time he cut Sir Gawain’s neck a little, but didn’t hurt him.
Sir Gawain was angry. He said: “Why did you try three times? We agreed only once!” The Green Knight told him that he was, in fact, the lord of the castle. “I didn’t cut you the first two times because you were honest for two days! But on the third day, you didn’t tell me about the belt. So I had to cut you!”
Sir Gawain returned to King Arthur’s court. He was sad because he had not been honest. He decided to wear the belt around his neck for the rest of his life. He told King Arthur: “When I become arrogant, I can look at the belt and remember that I am not a perfect knight.”

James
My name is James. I’m fourteen, and I moved to this town with my family three months ago. My parents lived here when they were young, but my brother and I didn’t know anyone here except a few aunts and uncles we’d met when we’d spent a couple of weeks with my grandparents during school holidays. When I started school, one of my cousins, Sophie, who was in my class, was very friendly for the first week, and I was happy to have a friend in a strange place. Then, for no reason, she stopped talking to me and I felt very hurt and lonely for several weeks.
In the end, I made some more friends and once I got to know them, I’ve been fine. Now Sophie is having a disco party for her birthday next week and she has invited me. I don’t want to go. My brother says he heard someone say she only asked me because her parents said she had to. But my mum and dad say it would be rude not to accept. Some of my new friends are invited, too. I went to the cinema last week and laughed all the way through the new film “Waiter!” which is set in a restaurant. American actor Tom Waters plays the worst cook the world has ever seen, and he employs one of the worst waiters, played by Joe Vermont.
The London restaurant where the filming took place actually does exist. Jane Connors, the owner, runs a successful business with many regular customers. However, although she thinks “Waiter!” is a good film, she is very annoyed with the director. When she agreed to the filming, she wasn’t told that the film is about a restaurant where everything goes wrong and the food is disgusting. Although the film might make Jane’s restaurant famous if it is a success, she is afraid that people will stop coming because they will think the food and the service are terrible – like it is in the film. Jane is worried she will lose business and may even have to close and start again with a new restaurant.
Having seen the film, I agree that she has a problem. The film company paid her a very small fee, and she has since asked for more. The best solution for her is to contact the newspapers. I am sure they will be interested in her story and it will actually help her business in the end.

A Test of Bravery
In France there once lived a lady who was so beautiful that all men who saw her immediately fell in love with her.
However, she was so cruel that she would neither agree to marry any of her lovers nor let them go.
One day there was a great show of lions in the palace of gardens, and thousands of people came to see the terrible but beautiful animals. The lions were roaring and the people were trembling with fear when the lady arrived surrounded by her lovers.
“Now I shall find out which of you really loves me!” the lady cried. And pulling one of her gloves off, she threw it right into the middle of the lions. “Whoever will bring me my glove is a true lover!” she continued.
The men surrounding her turned pale. Who would dare to go among such animals? There was silence for a moment. Then a handsome young man, one of the bravest captains of France stepped forward. Without saying a single word, he jumped lightly over the fence and advanced upon the lions. The spectators hardly breathed. They expected the bold man to be torn to pieces. But to their surprise, the lions frightened by the man’s calm look and fearless behaviour retreated from him, as he advanced.
He picked up the lady’s glove and returned safely to the lady’s side. The lady looked at him with shining eyes. Even her cruel heart was touched by his bravery.
“You are a true lover”, she cried. But the handsome captain’s eyes as he handed her glove were hard and cold.
“I have brought back your glove, my lady,” he said. “But I take back my love. A woman like you does not deserve real love.”

A. Last week I went to visit Atlantic College, an excellent private college in Wales. Unusually, it gives young people much needed experience of life outside the classroom, as well as the opportunity to study for their exams. The students, who are aged between 16 and 18 and come from all over the world, spend the morning studying. In the afternoon they go out and do a really useful activity, such as helping on the farm, looking after people with learning difficulties, or checking for pollution in rivers.
B. One of the great things about Atlantic College students is that they come from many different social backgrounds and countries. As few can afford the fees of £20,000 over two years, grants are available. A quarter of the students are British, and many of those can only attend because they receive government help.
C. “I really admire the college for trying to encourage international understanding among young people”, as Barbara Molenkamp, a student from the Netherlands, said. “You learn to live with people and respect them, even the ones you don’t like. During the summer holidays my mother couldn’t believe how much less I argued with my sister.”
