Bird Island
Once there was a beautiful island. It was called Bird Island. Many birds lived on the island. There were big birds and small birds, blue birds and red birds. There were parrots, ostriches and eagles.
One day there was a very strong wind. It blew across the sea and it blew across the land. The birds were all afraid. The next day it was quiet and still. A small yellow bird sat in a tree.
“Who are you? Where do you come from?” asked a parrot in his language.
The parrot said to the ostrich. “Who is this? Where does he come from?”
“I don’t know,” said the ostrich. “I don’t understand his language. The wind carried him here.”
The night was quiet and still but the yellow bird was unhappy.
“I don’t understand them,” he said. “I don’t understand their language.”
Suddenly an eagle landed in the tree. “What’s the matter?” she said. “Why are you crying?”
“I can’t understand the parrot, I can’t understand the ostrich,” said the yellow bird. “I can’t understand their language.”
“Don’t worry,” said the eagle. “I can teach you. Listen carefully. Sing after me.”
The yellow bird listened carefully and learnt the language of the other birds. At last, he was friends with all the other birds.

Mr. Stone was a very clever man whose thoughts were always on learning. When he applied for a post at Camford University, his friends had no doubts that he would get the job. Even though there were hundreds of candidates willing to try their luck, he made up his mind to take part in the contest. Arriving at Camford, a very small town, he learnt that the only hotel was already full. So, he had to stay in the same room with another candidate, a cheerful fellow called Adams, about twenty years younger that himself. After the committee had listened to all the candidates only two of them, Mr. Stone and Mr. Adams, were chosen because it seemed impossible to decide who was more skilful. That is why, they were both asked to prepare a report on ancient Greece and to give a lecture on the subject in three days’ time.
Mr. Stone almost stopped eating and sleeping. He worked day and night, arranging his thoughts, writing out and learning his lecture by heart. As for Adams, he didn’t seem to do any preparation. He spent most of his time playing tennis and going to parties and did not return to his room till midnight.
On the day of the lecture Mr. Stone, waiting for his turn to speak, discovered that his speech disappeared. Turning his head, he saw Adams take the stolen speech out of his pocket and heard him read it to the audience. Adams read it so well that when he finished there was a storm of applause. Mr. Stone was too much upset to express his ideas in a different way. Therefore, when his turn came, he could only repeat the same speech word for word, in a low voice.
When the committee went out to decide who the successful candidate was, everyone was sure what their choice would be. However, when the Dean gave Mr. Stone’s name at last, nobody could believe it! They all had admired Mr. Adams’s remarkable speech so much! Asked for explanation, the Dean said:
“The reason why we have chosen Mr. Stone is that he was able to repeat from memory a brilliant lecture he had never heard before. What a memory must he have! And a fine memory is quite necessary for this post.”
As they walked out of the room, the Dean came up to Mr. Stone and, shaking his hand, said: “Congratulations, Mr. Stone! However, let me give you a piece of advice. Be more careful and don’t leave valuable papers lying about!”

The Hot Dog
A hot dog is a funny name for a food, isn’t it? It really is. The story below may give you a really good idea of what a hot dog is.
The Germans invented the hot dog and called it “the frankfurter”, after Frankfurt, a German city.
Americans bought frankfurters for the first time in the 1860s. They gave it a different name “dachshund sausages”. A dachshund is a dog from Germany with a very long body and short legs, which looks like a sausage. Dachshund sausages became popular in New York, especially at baseball games. At the games the men walked down the stadium and said, “Get your dachshund sausages!”
One day in 1906 Tad Dorgan went to a baseball game. He was a newspaperman. When he saw the man with the dachshund sausages, he got an idea for a picture. The next day Tad Dorgan produced a picture of a piece of bread with dachshund inside. He didn’t know how to spell the name of this dog, so he wrote, “GET YOUR HOT DOGS!” under the picture. People liked the picture and the new name. And soon the name became very popular.
Now the hot dog is a common food in Russia. You can buy it almost anywhere, and if you are hungry and you don’t have enough time for dinner, a hot dog can make a really good snack.

Dear Mother and Father,
I arrived here in Poland at six thirty last Friday. My plane was only an hour late, which was surprising because there were a lot of people at Newark Airport. I think everyone in America is going away for Christmas! Jan was at the airport to meet me in his very old car. It made a lot of strange noises and I was happy when we arrived at his parents’ home. His parents are very nice. His mother is small and slim. She has fair hair and very blue eyes, just like Jan. His father is tall and fair and quite well-built. I don’t understand what they say because they don’t speak any English, but we communicate with gestures. I really must learn to speak Polish!
They were very pleased with the presents you sent them. They’re looking forward to eating the fruit cake on Christmas Day. They asked me to thank you very much.
Their house is small but very comfortable. They have an enormous vegetable garden behind the house. They grow all the vegetables they need.
Jan is not working this week, so he can spend time with me. Yesterday, we visited the town. The old quarter is very pretty. There are a lot of interesting buildings and a very beautiful cathedral by the river. Unfortunately, the modern part of the town is ugly and quite dirty.
Tomorrow, we’re going out into the country for the day. We’re going in Jan’s car, so I hope we get back all right!
Have a lovely Christmas day at home.
Love, Ruth
