The Trojan Horse

Many, many years ago there was a war between the Greeks and the Trojans. The Greek ships sailed up to the city of Troy. When the Trojans saw the Greek ships, they closed the gates of their city and stayed behind the walls. The Greeks attacked the city many times, but could not take it. The Greeks made a big wooden horse, and the leaders of the Greek army hid inside the horse. In the morning the Greeks burned their camp and sailed away. Only the big wooden horse remained in front of the gates. But the Greek ships did not sail far. At first the Trojans wanted to burn the wooden horse, but a Greek prisoner said, “Don’t burn the horse. Bring it into Troy. It will help you.” They brought the wooden horse into the city.

The next day was a holiday in Troy. At night all the Trojan soldiers fell asleep. The Greek ships came back to Troy at the night. When everything was quiet, the leaders of the Greek soldiers came out of the wooden horse and opened the gates of the city. The Greek army was near Troy. The Greek soldiers came into the city, killed very many Trojans and took the city.

Story 1

This happened in England in 1966, two months before the World Cup Football Tournament. One night thieves broke in and took the Cup. Police arranged a national investigation and offered a reward of ₤6 000. A few days later a man was walking his dog, Pickles, in South London. The dog found the Cup, which was made of solid gold. It was lying beside the road, wrapped in newspaper. Pickles owner returned the cup, collected the reward, and Pickles was a national hero.

Story 2

A friend of mine was working on his car at the top of a hill, near where he lives. He put his dog inside the car while he was working. He was under the car when suddenly he heard “clunk”, and the car slowly started to move. He got out from under the car, and saw the dog, sitting at the wheel, and the car moving, faster and faster, down the hill. The dog had released the handbrake. Summerhill is a special school which A.S. Neill, a famous teacher, and his wife started in 1921 in Leiston, a town 150 kilometres north of London. They wanted to start a new kind of school – a school where children are happy!

One difference between Summerhill and other school is that teachers in Summerhill hate tests! The teachers only give them to children who want to go to university. Another difference between Summerhill and other schools is that the children there don’t have to go to classes. There is a timetable, but it is for the teachers, not for children!

Does this mean that children stay away from lessons? Not really. Young children want to go to classes from the first day. Older children don’t always go to class when they first arrive. But after three months in Summerhill, they usually start to go to the classes which they find interesting. This is because Summerhill is not like all schools – the children in it enjoy learning and love their school.
