CD, The listening text (page 10 of the book)

When Robin reached his eighteenth birthday, he decided to speak to his father about the contest in Nottingham.

“Father, please let me go to Nottingham,” Robin said. “I am old enough to enter the contest and I am the best archer in Locksley. I can hit a target at five hundred paces. Let me compete with the archers in Nottingham. I am sure that I can win.”

His father was silent for a moment, then he replied: “You are a very good archer, my boy. But the King and the Sheriff want archers for their wars. Don’t go Robin. Stay in Locksley and be a farmer. It’s not a bad life.”

“But I want to see the world,” said Robin. “I have never been to Nottingham. And I may win one hundred golden crowns. With that money we can buy more land. And... then I can ask Marian to marry me!”

“You may win the contest,” replied Robin’s father, “but Marian’s family still won’t let you marry her. They want their daughter to marry a knight, not a farmer.”

“But your father was a knight,” said Robin. “He owned land in Huntington and around Locksley.”

“That was over twenty years ago,” said his father. “The Sheriff took most of our land when my father could not pay his taxes. Now we are poor but honest.”

“I’m sure that Marian will marry me for love,” replied Robin.

STEP 2

Read (silently) the talk (Handout to be given to the pupils in class) between Prince John and the Steward (распорядитель состязания). Try to remember the information in this dialogue and who the phrases belong to, then present this talk as if you were 1) Prince John, 2) the Steward. You are given special support on the handout to fulfill this task.

HANDOUT

Prince John turned to the Steward and said: “This beggar is a strange-looking man, he is too old to take part in the contest.”

“You are right, your highness, and he has got this awful patch on his eye,” the Steward continued.

“Do you know his name?” the Prince asked.

“He calls himself Jack of Lincoln. He fought in the King’s wars,” the Steward hurried to answer.

“I’m sure he can’t shoot straight with only one eye. By the way, Robin Hood hasn’t come to the contest,” the prince sounded disappointed.

“Look! The beggar is taking aim,” the Steward said to the Prince.

“Well, he will not beat my best archer, Gilbert,” the Prince said feeling a bit nervous.

“Let’s watch the beggar!” Oh! No! He has hit Gilbert’s arrow and split (расщепил) it!” the Steward shouted at the top of his voice. “He has won!”

Before the pupils are asked to present their role stories (ролевой рассказ) the teacher checks their understanding of the text. The pupils read on the screen the sentences from this text which are given in the wrong order, they are supposed to arrange these sentences in the correct logical order saying who the words belong to. They must read these sentences in reported speech and they shouldn’t consult the text.

E.g. “The beggar is taking aim.”

The Steward told the Prince that the beggar was taking aim.

1. “Let’s watch the beggar! Oh! No! He has hit Gilbert’s arrow and split it!”

2. “Do you know his name?”

3. “I’m sure he can’t shoot straight with only one eye.”

4. “This beggar is a strange-looking man.”

5. “By the way, Robin Hood hasn’t come to the contest.”

6. “You are right, my highness, and he has got this awful patch on his eye.”

7. “He has won!”

8. “Look! The beggar is taking aim.”

NOTE: The pupils are asked to present the talk as if they were Prince John and the Steward, they are given time to think it over, the box below can be of help to them.

HOME TASK:

1. Write down the sentences of Step 2 in reported speech, arranging them in logical order.

2. Present the contents of the soundtrack in the reported speech orally.

Teacher’s note: The material is presented in the logical development of the events as they are described in the book and shown in the cartoon.
