THE OLD MAN AND THE BEAR

Part 1

An old man goes to the woods and plants turnips.

A bear comes to the old man and says: “It’s my place! Go away or I’ll break your bones!”

The old man says: “You’d better help me plant the turnips. Then we can share our turnip crop.”

The bear says: “Good! I’ll take the tops and you’ll take the roots.”

The old man agrees and they plant the turnips together.

In the autumn the old man and the bear meet to share their turnip crop.

The bear takes the tops and the old man takes the roots.

The old man goes home. He is happy.

The bear eats the leaves but he doesn’t like them.

He sees a small turnip on the ground and eats it. He likes it very much.

The bear roars: “It’s sweet like honey! What a cunning man!”

Part 2

Next year the old man goes to the woods and plants rye.

The bear comes to the old man and says: “I know you’re as cunning as a fox! This time I’ll take the roots and you’ll take the tops. If you don’t agree with me, I’ll break your bones!”

The old man agrees and they plant the rye together.

In the autumn the old man and the bear meet to share their crop.

The bear takes the roots and the old man takes the tops.

The old man goes home. He is very, very happy.

The bear eats the roots but he doesn’t like them. They are like wood.

The bear is very, very angry with the old man. He says: “Don’t ever let me catch sight of you again or I’ll break your bones!”

Exercise 1. Put the story back in order.

The teacher writes the sentences of the story on the blackboard but changes the order. Or the teacher photocopies the next sheet, and asks the pupils to put the number before the sentences according to their order in the text.

The bear says: “Good! I’ll take the ends and you’ll take the beginnings.”

In the winter the old man and the bear meet to share their turnip crop.

The bear takes the tops and the old man takes the roots.

The old man goes home. He is sad.

The bear eats the branches but he doesn’t like them.

He sees a small turnip on the ground and licks it. He likes it very much.

The bear roars: “It’s sweet like ice-cream! What a cunning man!”

Exercise 4. Match the sentence halves.

There are some long sentences from the text. Connect sentence-halves by underlining or circling them with different coloured pens.

Old Man plants a turnip.

They pull and pull but can’t pull it out.

So Old Woman calls Little Girl.

Little Girl holds on to Old Woman; Old Woman holds on to Old Man; Old Man pulls the turnip.

They pull and pull but can’t pull it out.

So Little Girl calls Dog. Dog holds on to Little Girl; Little Girl holds on to Old Woman; Old Woman holds on to Old Man; Old Man pulls the turnip.

They pull and pull but can’t pull it out.

So Dog calls Cat. Cat holds on to Dog; Dog holds on to Little Girl; Little Girl holds on to Old Woman; Old Woman holds on to Old Man; Old Man pulls the turnip.
