Stage 1

Introduction. Topical Warming Up

Time: 3 min.

Procedure: Show objects from different countries/cities – the students try to guess where they are from.

Aims:

– Warm the students up.

– Make the students feel relaxed.

– Activate the existing knowledge of the topic.

Stage 2

New Words Introduction

Time: 3 min.

Procedure: Attract their attention to the words, written on the whiteboard.

Read them out. Let the students guess the translation with the help of a single context.

Aims: To focus on form and pronunciation.

Stage 3

Copying the Words

Time: 2 min.

Procedure: Copy the words down in the notebooks. Close the notebooks afterwards.

Aims: To keep the new vocabulary “safe and sound”.

Stage 4

Matching

Time: 2 min.

Procedure: Pair-work. Match the broken collocations.

Aims: To focus on form.

Interaction: SS-SS

Stage 5

Eliminating

Time: 2 min.

Procedure: Pair-work (change pairs). Distribute the cards that contain all the new words and collocation and 3 extra expressions. Single the odd ones out.

Aims:

– To focus on form.

– Recognition.

Interaction: SS-SS

Stage 6

Recognizing Definitions

Time: 5 min.

Procedure: Group-work (groups of 3). I read the definitions for a new unit. The students show the card with the unit.

Aims: To help students recognize the new expressions.

Interaction: SS-SS

Stage 7

A Big Creativity Game

Time: 20 min.

Procedure: Three teams compete in making the largest grammatically correct sentence using as many new words and expressions as they can. Linking expressions are on the whiteboard to facilitate the sentence structures.

Contexts:

1) Robinson Crusoe is writing the memoirs of his life.

2) A Hollywood scriptwriter is thinking of an idea for a new western.

3) You are talking about your most unforgettable journey.

4) Tom Sawyer is lying about his trip to Australia.

5) A just-married couple are talking about their honeymoon to the Bahamas that went wrong.

6) Jules Verne is introducing his new adventure book.

Aims:

– To focus on meaning and their own usage of the new vocabulary.

– To evoke a desire to win using knowledge.

Stage 8

Guessing Game

Time: 8 min.

Procedure: Activity “Trips all around” (3. at the end of this plan). Three teams (change the teams) are unscrambling the puzzle to guess the secret message. (The message is: “A good friend makes an enjoyable journey.”)

After they guess – provoke a little discussion:

1) Do you agree with this phrase?

2) What can spoil a journey?

3) What will your best journey be like?

Aims: Guessing the new words and writing them correctly.

Stage 9

Final Acrostic (Backup Task)

Time: 8 min.

Procedure: Write an acrostic on the word “TRIP” trying to use as many new words as possible.

Aims:

– To focus on production.

– To think creatively and critically.

Stage 10

Giving Hometask. Closing Remarks

Time: 2 min.

Procedure: Imagine you are a travel agent. Make an advertisement for a brand new tour.

Context sentences to guess the meaning of the new vocabulary:

to book a trip	We booked a trip to Australia and we are waiting impatiently for the journey to start. When we came to the place, everything was arranged for us.
to be seasick	The family couldn’t go by sea because the youngest daughter got seasick every time she stepped on board a ship. She was feeling unwell the whole voyage.
to set sail	Having found the necessary money, Fernando Magellan was ready to set sail for unknown lands. He had a ship, a team of people and finally left Spain.
to go hitch-hiking	Since students do not usually have a lot of money to spend and are adventurous, hitch-hiking is the best for them. Stop a car – and go wherever you wish!
to have a complaint	After the awful trip, the tourists were furious. They had numerous complaints about the bus that was late, the guide who was rude, the overall organization and even about the bad weather!
environmental protection	The government always talks a lot about environmental protection but it is high time to do something to protect nature.
guided tour	Our idea was to have guided tours around all the chief towns in Spain, since we were there for the first time and didn’t know anything about this wonderful country. We wanted a professional to guide us and take care of us.
package holiday	If you are on a package holiday, your travel company’s representative should act on your behalf and help you in any situation his help is needed.
thrilling experience	Our trip to Zambia was a really thrilling experience – that was the first time we went on a safari trip and saw crocodiles in their natural habitat.
weather forecast	The weather forecast is always interesting – we need to know what to wear, but unfortunately it is not always accurate.
yacht	We set sail on a yacht – a light boat, that was wonderfully graceful.
jet	The jet plane was small and so fast! It was nearly the best in all the air-show.
