WARM-UP ACTIVITY:

1. Think of a few warm countries in winter and a few cold ones.

E.g.: I think in Kenya it is hot in winter while in Finland it is cold.

Exercise 1

Here is a list of activities you can do either in a cold country in winter or in a hot one. Write them in 2 columns. Sometimes both variants are possible.

Activities:

to visit the museum, church or castle; to go windsurfing; to go skiing in the mountains; to play beach volleyball; to swim; to sunbathe; to go tobogganing; to dive; to go skating; to climb the hills; to take photos; to throw snowballs; to go to wild safari; to go snowboarding

Add some more activities to the list.

Make sentences using the words from exercise 1 following the example given.

Exercise 3

1. Read and translate the text.

Last winter Paola and her boyfriend Martin went for a holiday to Russia. It was cold. The snow was everywhere: on the fences, in the trees, in the bushes.

Paola went to the sports centre “Nike” and bought a pair of skis. So she went skiing in the forest. Also she and Martin went to the skating rink in Sokolniki Park.

Angela, 17: I’d like to visit a warm country, Turkey, by the way.
Misha, 15: I prefer cold places.
Nina, 20: I hate hot savannas! I would never go there.
Cyril, 12: India would be fantastic!
Roma, 22: The Alps are perfect. I enjoy skiing!
Susan, 18: I’d go to New Zealand. Why? Oh, you climb the peak of the mountain and enjoy the view. It’s so romantic!

Work in pairs.

Discuss where you would go for winter vacation and what you would do there.
