Mother: Where are you going, my dear girl?

Fay: Yes, I have, and I watered the flowers.
Mother: OK. You can go, but be back by eleven.
Fay: Do I have to? All the other girls can stay out till midnight at the weekend.
Mother: I don’t care about the other girls. Eleven o’clock is late enough for a fifteen-year-old girl. And… just a minute. Aren’t Jane’s parents on vacation?
Fay: They are in Venice. So what?
Mother: So, I don’t want you to get into trouble. You know I don’t like you to be with your friends when there’re no adults around.
Fay: Her cousin will be there. He’s nineteen. And none of the other parents mind. You are the only one.
Mother: Maybe the other parents don’t care what happens to their children, but I do.
Fay: I thought you liked my friends. Why don’t you trust me?
Mother: Oh, take it easy. But I don’t trust anyone under twenty-one.
Fay: That’s nice. And I don’t trust anyone over twenty-one!
Mother: Fay, shame on you! You are speaking to your mother in this way!
Fay: I’m not on speaking terms with you any more.
