The Mermaid
Based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen.

(Звучит музыка, русалки танцуют. На троне сидит Морской царь.)
Mermaid 1: It’s so great on the sea surface!
Mermaid 2: Oh! How interesting it is there!
Mermaid 3: Enormous ocean liners are sailing up there.
Mermaid 2: Nice fish that can sing and fly in the air.
Mermaid 1: There is a beautiful city on the coast.
Mermaid 3: I saw a wonderful palace with fountains in front of it and a beautiful garden around.
Mermaid 2: The King and the Prince live in this magnificent palace.
Sea Tsar: (подходит к Русалочке) My dear daughter, Mermaid, you are coming of age! Tomorrow will be your birthday. Tomorrow you’ll be able to go to the sea surface.
Mermaid: Oh! Tomorrow I’ll see the World! I’m looking forward to it so much!
Scene 2
(Звучит тревожная музыка. Русалки танцуют. Вдали несколько человек изображают корабль. Буря. Гром. Они падают и кричат.)
Sailors: We’re drowning! We’re going down!
(Принц оказывается рядом с Русалочкой.)
Mermaid: Don’t be afraid! I’ll rescue you! You won’t drown! I’ll save your life!
(Русалочка ведет Принца к краю сцены.)
Mermaid: We’re on the sea shore now. You’re safe. Enjoy your life, dear Prince!
(Русалочка уходит, как будто уплывает в море.)
Scene 3
Witch: I can guess why you have come to my place. You have fallen in love with a handsome prince. You want to have legs instead of a tail, don’t you?
Mermaid: Yes, I do.
Witch: All right, I’ll make you legs but you’ll give me your voice for it.
Mermaid: How on earth will I sing?
Witch: You’ll be able to neither sing nor speak. Ha, Ha, Ha... But if the Prince marries another girl, you’ll die!
Mermaid: I agree.
Witch: Then I’ll make a magic potion…(Ведьма танцует как будто колдует, готовит волшебное зелье, поёт песню.)
Witch’s Song
I take the water from the marsh
With tadpoles, leeches; have a crash
On spider, lizard; drop a snail –
And now I’ve made a magic spell.
(Ведьма даёт Русалочке приготовленное зелье.)
Witch: Have this potion!
(Русалочка пьёт волшебное зелье. Звучит тревожная музыка. Русалочка и Ведьма, кружась, уходят со сцены.)
Scene 4
(Русалочка и принц танцуют.)
Prince: You’re so beautiful! I love you so much! I wish you could speak. My father wants me to get married to the Princess from the neighbouring Kingdom. But I love you and I will marry only you. There is the only girl who I could love more than you. She saved my life during the storm. But I am afraid I’ll never find her.
(Танцуют. Кружась, уходят со сцены.)
Scene 5
(Звучит грустная музыка. Русалочка одна на берегу моря.)
Mermaid: Dear father, dear sisters-mermaids. I miss you. And I love the Prince so much!
(Появляется Принц.)
Prince: (Русалочке) I’ve recognized her. The girl who rescued me is the Princess from the neighbouring Kingdom. Our wedding is tomorrow. Don’t be sad, please! Farewell! (уходит в конец сцены, садится на камень.)
(Появляется Морской царь, другие Русалки.)
Sea Tsar: The Prince’s wedding is tomorrow. You’ll die at dawn... We spoke to the Witch. There is one way to save you. The Witch gave us a magic knife. Here it is. Kill the Prince and you’ll turn into the Mermaid again, you’ll be again with us. The Prince is sleeping now. Kill him! (даёт Русалочке нож)
(Принц спит. Русалочка подходит с ножом.)
Sea Tsar: Kill the Prince!
Mermaid 1: Kill the Prince!
Mermaid 2: Kill him!
Mermaid 3: Kill the Prince!
Sea Tsar: The Sun is rising!
Mermaid 1: The Sun is rising!
Mermaid 2: The Sun is rising!
Mermaid 3: Kill the Prince!
(Русалочка заносит нож над Принцем.)
Mermaid: No!..
(Русалочка роняет нож и умирает. Звучит музыка. Танцуя, изображая волны, с лёгкими прозрачными шарфами, появляются Русалки. Выходит принц, поёт, помогает подняться Русалочке. Поют вместе. На заднем плане среди танцующих Русалок, постепенно появляются Морской Царь, моряки, Колдунья. Принц и Русалочка поют, держась за руки, подходят к краю сцены.)
