Group Activity: Shopping

Each group goes to a different shop. You have to choose what you can buy there. After that one person from the group reads his (her) list out loud and makes sentences like the model. Then students work in pairs and practice the dialogues. Here are the cards:

CARD ONE

Choose what you can buy at the shop. You are all going to the butcher’s.

At the butcher’s I can buy:
ham
pork
matches
doll
soap
cat
sausages
chicken
bread
beef
meat
frog

Make sentences like this:
Yesterday I went to … I bought some … for me and my sister. Laura didn’t buy any … because … Henry bought … and paid by credit card.

CARD TWO

Choose what you can buy at the shop. You are all going to the grocer’s:

At the grocer’s I can buy:
chocolate
salt
postcards
car
butter
lemonade
margarine
book
chairs
coffee
flour [flaue]
writing paper
music center
crisps

Make sentences like this:
Yesterday I went to … . I bought some … and …. . I didn’t buy … because I … . I paid by credit card.

CARD THREE

Choose what you can buy at the shop. You are all going to the florist’s.

At the florist’s I can buy:
tulip bread
cactus fish
socks plants
rose newspaper
lilie daisies
jam seeds
trousers soil

Make sentences like this:
Yesterday we went to … . I bought some … for my girl-friend. Leo bought … and paid by credit card.

Read and translate the dialogue:
S1: Hi, can I help you?
S2: Yes, please! I’d like some beans and peas.
S1: Would you like red beans or white beans?
S2: Red, please.
S1: Here they are. Anything else?
S2: Well, a bottle of mineral water, please.
S1: One liter or half a liter?
S2: Half, if possible. How much is that?
S1: Two dollars seventy-nine, please.
S2: Can I pay by credit card?
S1: Certainly.
S2: Thank you. Good-bye!
S1: Bye!
Now work in pairs, using the lists from your cards, and make your own dialogues.

GROUP DISCUSSION

Answer these questions:
1) Do you like shopping? Why?
2) Who do you usually go shopping with? When do you go shopping?
3) Who in your family usually goes shopping?
4) What’s your favorite shop in Moscow?
5) When did you last go shopping? What did you buy?

Vocabulary list:
1) a shop – магазин;
to go shopping – ходить по магазинам;
at the shop – в магазине
2) market – рынок;
supermarket – супермаркет, универсам;
boutique – бутик
3) florist’s – цветочный магазин
4) chemist’s – аптека (Am.E. – drugstore)
5) grocer’s – бакалейная лавка
6) butcher’s – мясная лавка
7) to buyboughtbought – покупать;
to sell – sold – sold – продавать
8) clothes shop – магазин одежды
9) shopping bag – сумка для продуктов
