Teacher: Is February the month of love? Well, it certainly is if you count the chocolates, the cards, the roses and the special dinners all centered around one day, Valentine’s Day, the 14th of February.
On the 14th of February Valentine’s Day is celebrated. It is a day to share loving feelings with friends and family. It is also known as a holiday honouring lovers. This is a happy day because it is specially dedicated to celebrate love, affection and friendship.
Student:

My Valentine

I have a little Valentine
That someone sent to me.
It’s pink and white
And red and blue,
And pretty as can be.

Forget-me-nots
Are round the edge,
And tiny roses, too;
And such a lovely piece of lace,
The very palest blue.

And in the center
There’s a heart
As red as red can be!
And on it’s written
All in gold, “To You,
With love from Me”.

By M. C. Parsons

valentine возлюбленный, возлюбленная; любовное послание, посылаемое влюбленными в день св. Валентина

Teacher: The word “love” can have many different meanings. But through all these meanings, many people would agree that they want to love and be loved.
Let’s read some quotations about love.

Love is life and if you miss love, you miss life. Leo Buscaglia
Love isn’t love until you give it a way. Michael W. Smith
Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind. And thus is winged Cupid painted blind. William Shakespeare

All mankind loves a lover. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Life is the flower for which love is the honey. Victor Hugo
Where there is love there is life. Mahatma Gandhi
It is not only necessary to love, it is necessary to say so. French proverb

Teacher: Here are some more sayings by well-known people. They are in Russian. Translate the following statements into English and at the end of the lesson choose one for a one-page composition.

Любовь – самая сильная из всех страстей, потому что она одновременно завладевает головою, сердцем и телом. (Вольтер)
Love is the strongest of all passions: it takes hold of head, heart and body at the same time. (Voltaire)
Когда мы любим, мы теряем зрение. (Лопе де Вега)
When we are in love we become blind. (Lopez de Vega)
Истинная любовь всегда делает человека лучше. (А. Дюма – сын)
Real love always makes people better. (Dumas the younger)

Teacher: I think it’s time for “Derby Writing”. Write about the topic: “The ways you could show your love for an individual on Valentine’s Day” or “A perfect Valentine’s Day”. You know that it’s a race. Write as fast as possible until I say “Stop!” At the end of a predetermined time for writing, each student will count the number of words he or she has written. The student with the most words wins.
Fill in the blanks with words from the hearts:

Some __1__ associate Valentine’s Day with one or more __2__ of the early Christian Church. Over the years the various Valentines __3__ into one. Many legends have been handed down about St. Valentine.

Another legend says that Valentine __12__ the jailer’s daughter of blindness. Supposedly, he sent her a letter which he __13__, “From your Valentine”.

Teacher: P is the winner of the task. But remember that you all are the best. You can appreciate your writing yourself, choose the praise you like most of all:
Well done! I knew you could do it!
I’m proud of you! Good job! Beautiful work!
Fantastic job! Hip, hip hurray!
Creative job! What an imagination!
You tried hard!
Why do boys like girls? There are a lot of reasons why boys like girls. Here are a few of them. The author is unknown.

Student:

Why Do Boys Like Girls?

They will always smell good even if it’s just shampoo.
How cute they look when they sleep.
How cute they are when they eat.
The way they take hours to get dressed, but in the end it makes it all worthwhile.
Because they are always warm even when it’s minus 30 degrees outside.
The way they look good no matter what they wear.
The way they fish for compliments even if you both know that you think she’s the most beautiful girl in the world.
How cute they are when they argue.
The way they smile.
The way you feel when you see her name on the call display after you’ve just had a big fight.
The way they kiss you when you do something nice for them.
The way they kiss you when you say “I love you”.
Actually...just the way they kiss you...
The way they fall into your arms when they cry.
The way they say “I miss you”.
They way their tears make you want to change the world so that it doesn’t hurt her anymore...

Teacher: Why do girls like boys? There are also a lot of reasons why girls like boys. Here are a few of them. The author is also unknown.

Student:

Why Do Girls Like Boys?

The way they look at you and you want to die right then and there.
The way they open their arms to you when you are crying.
The way they kiss away your tears.
Just the way they kiss you.
The way they hold you close when you are cold.
The way they say “I love you” when you are together. The way they say “I love you” in front of their friends. Just the way they say “I love you”.
The way they smile at you.
The way they always let you win any game that you play together.
The way they look at you when you’re mad at them and all your anger melts away.
How they always know just what to say to make you blush.
The way they never admit that you’ve hurt them.
How they sometimes think that they know just what to say to make you feel better, even if you think that it is the worst thing that they could say.
The way they always wear their favourite cologne (which happens to be the one that you bought them for their birthday).
The way that they try not to cry when they are afraid that they are losing you.

Teacher: And what about you, my dear students? Why do you like boys/girls?
The romantic inside us finds new energy in the midst of winter’s doldrums. Poets take pen to paper (or nowadays keyboard to email) and sweet words flow in streams of eloquence.
There are a lot of poems about love. It is also possible to speak about love in a humorous way. Listen and enjoy them.

Student:

I Love You More Than Applesauce

I love you more than applesauce,
Than peaches and a plum,
Than chocolate hearts,
And cherry tarts,
And berry bubble-gum.

I love you more than lemonade,
And seven-layer cake,
Than lollipops,
And candy drops,
And thick vanilla shake.
I love you more than marzipan,
Than marmalade on toast;
For I love pies
Of any size,
But I love you the most.

Student:

Love is...

Love is feeling cold in the back of vans
Love is a fanclub with only two fans
Love is walking holding paintstained hands
Love is

Love is fish and chips on winter nights
Love is blankets full of strange delights
Love is when you don’t put out the light
Love is

Love is presents in Christmas shops
Love is when you’re feeling Top of the Pops
Love is what happens when the music stops
Love is

Love is you and love is me
Love is a prison and love is free
Love’s what’s there when you’re away from me
Love is

Sorrows of Werther

Werther had a love for Charlotte
Such as words could never utter;
Would you know how first he met her?
She was cutting bread and butter.

Charlotte was a married lady,
And a moral man was Werther,
And, for all the wealth of Indies,
Would do nothing for to hurt her.

So he sighed and pined and ogled,
And his passion boiled and bubbled,
Till he blew his silly brains out,
And no more was by it troubled.

Charlotte, having seen his body
Borne before her on a shutter,
Like a well-conducted person,
Went on cutting bread and butter.

William M. Thackerey

You all got a love poem and all you had to do was insert some words and phrases of your own, following the guide. Read us your poetic version of a love poem.

Teacher: Now we are going to make up a story to define love.
What’s love? Can you define love?
So love is patient and kind, it is not jealous or envious, never boastful or proud. Love is not ill mannered or selfish or easily angered. Love does not keep a record of wrongs, it does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Love never gives up. It always protects. Always trusts. Always hopes. Always perseveres. Love never fails.
It has become a tradition for many couples to become engaged on Valentine’s day also, famous couples are remembered. Some of them are Romeo and Juliet, Caesar and Cleopatra.
Let’s play a “Broken Heart/Mended Heart” game. You have different hearts. Each heart is cut into two separate puzzle pieces. On each half there is a name of a famous person. You are to match the famous couples:

Carmen Don Jose
Adam Eve
Lady Di Prince Charles
Napoleon Josephine
John Lennon Yoko
Tarzan Jane
Rhett Butler Scarlet O’Hara
Cho-Cho-San Captain Pinkerton
Sophia Loren Carlo Ponti
Eurydice Orpheus
Cleopatra Mark Anthony
Elizabeth Benett Robert Browning
Romeo Juliet
Pocahontas John Smith
Beauty The Beast
Simba Nola
Aladdin Princess Jasmine
Mickey Minnie Mouse
Barbie Ken

Teacher: Would you like to know your fortune? This is one of the ways how the English girls get to know their fortunes on St. Valentine’s Eve.
They take an apple and cut it in four parts, count the seeds from the apple and find the fortune in the poem.
One – I love,
Two – I love,
Three – I love, I say.
Four – I love with all my heart,
Five – I cast away.
Six – he loves
Seven – she loves
Eight – they both love,
Nine – he comes,
Ten – he tarries
Eleven – he courts
Twelve – he marries.
or
Think of several names of boys and girls you might marry. As you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.

Student:

Did you know?

Your heart beats faster when you are in love. This is why the heart is considered to be the centre of our emotions and is always used to illustrate love. Being in love produces a special “high” feeling. Your blood pressure rises, bringing more blood to the surface of the skin. Your hair and skin improve in texture and your voice becomes deeper. Your immune system is also stronger, making you glow with health.

Teacher: Dear students, I wish you the best of luck and love on this Valentine’s Day! Try to make your relationship sweeter and more passionate. The following information will help you.

True Love

How to make your relationship sweeter, deeper and more passionate.
Know that love is a process, not a destination.
Love yourself. Say what you feel. Ask for what you need. Reveal what makes you feel loved. Go easy on yourself.
Celebrate the exceptional. Praise the ordinary.
Do the extraordinary ordinary thing.
Be a person of your word.
Criticize only in private.
Do the unexpected. Behave yourself in public.
Shower each other with kisses. Speak love words.
Say “please” and “thank you”.
Give more gifts.
Ask if you can help. Listen for the meaning beneath the words.
Walk a mile in your sweetheart’s shoes.
Put your love on a billboard.
Communicate with one another. Negotiate the mundane.
Acknowledge the hardships your circumstances create.
Keep in touch. Take intimate time. Kindle the romance.
Watch your tongue. Depart and reunite with loving gestures.
Fight the good fight. Remember the early days of your love. Be willing to make the generous gesture.
Tie up your emotional loose ends.
Apologize. Apologize. Apologize. Play with one another. Celebrate with ceremonies. Reveal your fears.
Share your dreams. Be generous with your body. Trust one another. Console one another. Forgive one another. Acknowledge the power of language to create reality. Hold each other in the light.
Bow to the mystery of love.
