Alice in Wonderland
Театрализованное представление
Grown-up Alice:
Where do the days go
When you are young?
Where does a song go
Once it is sung?
When you are young
There are days without end.
The song will return
On the lips of a friend.
Where do the birds go
When summer’s done?
How fast is the rabbit
When on the run?
Birds after summer
To other lands roam,
As fast as the rabbit
Can safely reach home.
Where would you hide a particular key?
Well, on the table, attentive you’ll be.
How can you count all the tarts in the basket?
Let’s open my magic casket!
Scene 1
Music.
King of Hearts: I’m the King of Hearts sitting on my throne with my Queen of Hearts and a great crowd assembled around us: all sorts of little birds and beasts as well as the whole pack of cards.
Queen of Hearts: Who is this person in chains?
Knave: I’m a poor knave in chains, with a soldier on each side to guard me.
White Rabbit: I’m here too, with a trumpet in one hand, and a scroll of parchment in the other.
King of Hearts: What can I see in the very middle of the court? It’s a table with a large dish of tarts upon it. They look so good, it makes me quite hungry to look at them.
Queen of Hearts: I wish we’d get the trial done and hand round the refreshments. Let’s sing our favourite song we always begin our refreshments with.
A Song “Let’s Make Cake”
Let’s make cake,
Let’s make cake,
Mix in all the things that we like best,
A little bit of this,
A little bit of that,
What shall we put first?
And we shall mix in the eggs,
Mix in the eggs,
Stir and stir and
Stir and stir and
Let’s make cake.
And we shall mix in the ice-cream,
Mix in the ice-cream,
Stir and stir and
Stir and stir and
Let’s make cake.
White Rabbit: Excuse me. Let’s begin our court of justice. The Knave is guilty. He stole the tarts.
Queen of Hearts: The Queen’s tarts.
King of Hearts: The King’s tarts. Silence in court! Herald, read the accusation!
White Rabbit: The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts,
All on a summer day:
The Knave of Hearts, he stole those tarts, and took them quite away!
Queen of Hearts: Consider our verdict.
Knave: Not yet, not yet! There’s a great deal to come before that.
King of Hearts: Call the first witnesses.
Scene 2
Queen of Hearts: What’s your name, child?
Alice’s sister: I’m Mary.
Alice: My name is Alice, so please your Majesty.
King of Hearts: What had you been doing there?
Alice’s sister: We were very tired of sitting on the bank, and of having nothing to do. We wanted to run and play. But our mother made us read the book. But it had no pictures or conversations in it.
A Song “The Girls’ Song”
Oh, what fun to jump and to run!
Oh what fun to play in the sun!
To see the clouds pass by
And to smile, to wave them goodbye.
Oh, what joy to be just a girl,
Oh, what joy is simply to toy
With words. From birds to learn
To love blue skies, to yearn to return.
What a song, a bright happy song!
Come along and sing all day long:
la-la-la-la-la-la
Walk and hum it, just hum all day long.
Alice: Suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes ran close to me.
White Rabbit: Oh dear, oh dear, I shall be too late! Where is my watch? In my waist-coat pocket. The Duchess! The Duchess! Oh my dear paws! Oh my fur and whiskers! I should fetch a pair of gloves and a fan. Quick, now!
Alice: I got to my feet, ran across the field after it. I saw it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge and in another moment I went down after it.
Alice’s sister: She found herself in a dark hall, found a tiny golden key for a little door and when it fitted, to her great delight, opened the door.
King of Hearts: This is the key of my kingdom:
In that kingdom there is a city.
In that city is a town;
In that there is a street;
In that street there winds a lane;
In that lane there is a yard;
In that yard there is a house;
Queen of Hearts: In that house there waits a room;
In that room an empty table;
And on that table a basket,
A basket of sweet tarts,
Of tarts. Of tarts. A basket of sweet tarts.
My tarts! Did you eat them?
Alice: Surely. When I found a bottle with a paper label with the words “Drink me”, beautifully printed on it in large letters. I was only 10 inches high.
Alice’s sister: Soon her eye fell on a little glass box that was lying under the table. She opened it and found small tarts on which the words “EAT ME” were beautifully marked in currants. So she set to work, and very soon finished all of the tarts.
Queen of Hearts: The thief is found. Guilty! I see.
King of Hearts: Off with their heads!
Alice: We shan’t be beheaded. You, get to your place!
Scene 3
Herald: Call the second witness.
King of Hearts: What do you mean by that? Why have you come?
Caterpillar: Keep your temper. Come back. I’ve something important to say. I’m a caterpillar. And I know a lot about this girl.
A Song “Caterpillar song”
Alice:
Tell me what you were doing with your silver net.
Tell me what you were dreaming of when we first met.
Caterpillar:
I was sitting and knitting my pretty cacoon,
I was thinking of taking a nap in the moon.
Alice:
Oh, but why were you crying and looking upset?
Tell me where you were walking and trying to get?
I was sleeping and weeping beside a stream,
I was trying to wake up – it was a bad dream.
Herald: Is that all? What do you know about this girl?
Caterpillar: I met her in the forest. She couldn’t remember the things she used and didn’t keep the same size for ten minutes together. She needed medicine. I gave it to her.
Herald: You gave her the Queen’s tarts, didn’t you?
Caterpillar: Oh, no. Let me take my hookah. I got down off the mushroom, crawled away into the grass.
Herald: So what did you give her?
Caterpillar: I said: Look at this mushroom. It is perfectly round. One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter.
Herald: Stuff and nonsense. She’s not guilty.
Scene 4
Herald: Call the third witness.
Hatter: I beg your pardon, your Majesty, for bringing these in: but I hadn’t quite finished my tea when I was sent for.
King of Hearts: You ought to have finished. When did you begin?
Hatter: 14th of March, I think it was.
March Hare: 15th of March, I think it was.
Dormouse: 16th of March I think it was.
King of Hearts: Take off your hat.
Hatter: It isn’t mine. I keep them to sell. I’ve none of my own. I’m a hatter.
White Rabbit: Give your evidence, and don’t be nervous, or we’ll have you executed on the spot.
Hatter: I’m a poor man, your Majesty. We were together – March Hare, Dormouse and me. We were ready to have tea.
A Song “Come to the Party”
Come to the party, come to the party,
Come to the party come right now,
Think of something you want to do
And you can do it right now.
What do you like doing at parties?
I like eating cake.
You can eat cake on your own,
You can eat cake with your friend,
You can eat cake with everybody,
And you can do it right now.
What else do you like doing at parties?
I like having a dance.
You can have a dance on your own,
You can have a dance with your friend,
You can have a dance with everybody,
And you can do it right now.
Dormouse: No room, no room!
Alice: There’s plenty of room.
March Hare: Have some wine.
Alice: I don’t see any wine.
March Hare: There isn’t any.
Hatter: Then it wasn’t very civil of you to offer it.
Dormouse: It wasn’t very civil of her to sit down without being invited.
March Hare: She didn’t know it was our table. It’s laid for a great many more than three.
Alice: I wonder what you are doing here.
Hatter: Nobody wonders in Wonderland. I’m fond of singing and they enjoy dancing. There is no excuse for doing nothing.
March Hare: Maybe a cup of tea instead? I’m thirsty as a camel in the desert.
Dormouse: One man’s tea is another man’s poison.
Alice: You don’t have your friends for tea.
March Hare: She doesn’t have her friends for tea because she isn’t a cannibal!
Alice: I’m going to have these tarts. They seem rather tasty.
Dormouse: The proof of the cake is in the eating, isn’t it? If you want to eat tarts you can’t eat them. Mind you, they are baked by the Queen.
Alice: They are delicious.
Scene 5
King of Hearts: Poor child. She was hungry in Wonderland.
Rabbit: Your Majesty, what a shame. We can’t judge her or blame her for eating your tarts. She was hungry and she is hungry again.
Queen of Hearts: Help yourself. Eat as many tarts as you want.
Card 1:
Life would be an easy matter
If we didn’t have to eat.
If we never had to utter,
“Won’t you pass the bread and butter,”
Likewise “Push along that platter
Full of meat?”
Yes, if food was obsolete,
Life would be a jolly treat.
If we didn’t – shine or shower,
Old or young, ‘bout every hour –
Have to eat, eat, eat, eat, eat –
‘Twould be jolly if we didn’t have to eat.
Card 2:
We could save a lot of money
If we didn’t have to eat.
Could we cease our busy buying,
Baking, broiling brewing, frying,
Life would then be oh, so sunny
And complete;
If we wouldn’t fear to greet
every grocer in the street
If we didn’t – man and woman,
Very hungry, helpless human –
Have to eat, eat, eat, eat, eat –
We’d save money, if we didn’t have to eat.
Card 3:
All our worry would be over
If we didn’t have to eat.
Would be butcher, baker, grocer
Get our hand-earned money? No, Sir.
We would then be right in clover,
Cool and sweet.
Want and hunger we could cheat,
And we’d get there with both feet,
If we didn’t – poor or wealthy,
Halt or nimble, sick or healthy –
Have to eat, eat, eat, eat, eat –
We could get there, if we didn’t have to eat.
King of Hearts: The ball, the ball, the ball.
Queen of Hearts: And help yourselves with the Queen’s tarts.
Music.
Alice’s sister: Wake up, Alice dear! Why, what a long sleep you’ve had.
Alice: Oh, I’ve had such a curious dream!
Alice’s sister: It was a curious dream, dear, certainly. But now run in to your tea; it’s getting late.
Alice: But I’m not hungry.
Alice’s sister: Why?
All together: Maybe because of the Queen’s tarts.
