The Interregional Youth Dancing Festival “Black Cat”

The world of dance is extremely beautiful, charming and unpredictable. You never know what to expect from the dancers, what emotions they will awaken in you the next second, as this is sheer art. In this form of art, the framework of genres is quite flexible, which makes each composition so different from all the rest.
You don’t have to be a professional to participate in this magnificent world, as being a spectator already makes you a small part of it: you watch this glory and revive your energy. Therefore, it is really useful to spend some of your precious time and visit a dance concert or a festival.

In our country there are lots of dancing groups that practice performing activities, starting from various competitions, festivals and ending with tours. It is absolutely true that each city or town is famous for its own insight on the technique of a dance. And exactly this feature makes it so interesting to watch performances of different groups from different cities.

At the moment I am a member of a Moscow dancing group called “Gelicon”. We have our own philosophy of dance. So it was a really useful experience for me to visit a dance festival in Ryazan and see how different all the dancing groups are.

The Interregional Youth Dancing Festival called “Black Cat” takes place in Ryazan every year. This year was already the 20th, when dancing groups from different cities and towns came to compete for the title “The Best Collective”.

The program of the competition consisted of five categories:

  • “Club Dance” – a composition based on dance music (from disco to modern styles);

  • “Rock-n-Roll” – a composition to rock music;

  • “Slow” – a slow or lyrical composition;

  • “Folk” – a folk or ethnical composition;

  • “Freestyle” – any choreographic composition if it isn’t like the other categories.

This year 31 dancing groups participated in the festival. They were all from different cities: Ryazan, Orenburg, Shatsk, Kaluga, Skopin, Novomichurinsk, Tula, Ulyanovsk, Lipetsk, Kirov and Moscow. So it was a really tough problem for the jury to decide and choose only 5 winners.

Fortunately, the organizer of the Festival invented a special voting system: each spectator had a special scale on his entrance ticket, where they had to vote for those who they felt were the winners. After the main part of the festival, there was a short interval when the votes were calculated and the winners were chosen. This style of decision-making pleases the spectators very much, as they have a feeling that their votes may shape the destinies of the dancing groups.

All in all, if you want to relax, contemplate some splendid compositions, and have a really unforgettable experience, I strongly recommend that you visit the festival “Black Cat” next year at the end of March.
