Are Women Stronger than Men?
How come every time we hold debates I end up on the “wrong” side?
Not even once did I get the chance to prove and defend my point of view! This time the
topic was a very interesting one for me personally. An eternal question: Are men stronger
than women? Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against men; but being a feminist deep
down inside (as I think many women are) I have never had any doubt that the answer to the
question above was a resounding “NO!” Of course, women are stronger, better, smarter,
prettier – I thought. But that day I had to prove the opposite. Well, there was nothing
to do but to come up with arguments in favor of men.
Our team decided to split. Some had to think about physical strength,
others had to take brainpower into consideration; and I had to sum it all up, to give a
resume.
So we started with physical power. Olga, our first speaker, gave the
whole debating process a wonderful start by making everyone laugh! “Our house
believes,” she began in a very serious voice, “that men are stronger, because, first
of all, more boys are usually born and boys are generally bigger than girls, taller and
they have more muscles!” Then, of course, she mentioned the fact that men are, no doubt,
physically stronger which results in their being able to work longer hours and do more
work and harder work, too. They serve in the army, police, and fire brigades. Their role
is to hunt, defend, provide for the family; while a woman’s main role is to bring up
children and look after the house.
Then we moved on to our second point – mental strength. Julia explained how
mental strength (often combined with physical) brings power. And men have the most power
in the world. Men have authority. There are many more men in the Parliaments of the world,
in the Russian Duma, than there are women. That can be explained by the fact that they are
better specialists. They are not emotional like women, but precise and cold-blooded. It
turns out that men are better at many things. It’s much easier to think of a famous
writer, poet, artist, sculptor, inventor who is a man. And it is a fact that historically
most leaders are men. Of course there are cases like Queen Elizabeth or Angela Merkel, but
they are more like exceptions to the rule! Think of all the Kings and Presidents, they are
chosen by the people and they are chosen because of their power and authority which they
have gained due to their mental strength. So history itself proves that men are mentally
stronger than women.
I was the last speaker. I think it was the hardest part, but at the
same time the most interesting one! The girls were so good that they practically left me
with nothing to say. So, at first I summed up what they had said about the mental and
physical strength of men. Then I tried to counter the arguments of the opposing team. They
tried saying that men are weak – but women are weaker. They have temptations they
can’t resist. For example, Eve, the first woman, took a bite of the forbidden fruit. She
couldn’t resist the temptation! The opposing team also said that more and more women go
into business nowadays. It’s true, but what about their natural duty of holding the
family together and bringing up the children?
This subject is controversial indeed. And there are many debatable
points so I had to come up with a conclusion of some sort.
I remembered one of my favorite books, Gone with the Wind by
M. Mitchell. It made me think that no matter how strong a woman is, deep inside she
wants to have an even stronger man beside her, she wants to be weak, she wants him to
protect her. I asked every girl present if they’d like to have someone weaker and
stupider by their side. It’s obvious that the answer was: No. A really strong man is
stronger than the woman but let her think that it’s the other way around…
