I Never Go For Walks, Mr. Genie of the Lamp
|
I. Listen to the dialogue.
Ladies and gentlemen… The Great Genie of the Lamp!
The Great Genie
of the Lamp: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight I’d like to perform a very
special trick for you. People under hypnosis can often do extraordinary things. Sometimes
they think they are someone else. They often cry or laugh without reason. When they think
that they are swimming they are floating in the air. As you all know I always take someone
from the audience for my hypnotic shows. Can I have a volunteer, please?
Bobby: Me! Me!
The Great Genie of the Lamp: Come here, young man. What’s your name?
Bobby: Bobby.
The Great Genie of the Lamp: Tobby? What a strange name!
Bobby: It isn’t Tobby, Mr. Genie. It’s Bobby.
The Great Genie of the Lamp: Very good, Tobby. Let’s start. Look at me.
Imagine it’s autumn and you’re walking in the park…
Bobby: I never go for walks, Mr. Genie.
The Great Genie of the Lamp: But you only have to imagine it! The sun is shining
and…
Bobby: The sun never shines in autumn in England. Autumn is cold and rainy.
The Great Genie of the Lamp: Don’t make me angry and try to concentrate. Now,
look into my eyes, Tobby.
Bobby: I told you, Mr. Genie. My name isn’t Tobby. It’s Bobby. B-o-b-b-y.
The Great Genie of the Lamp: Concentrate! You are now sitting on a beautiful
beach. The sea is very…
Bobby: I hate going to the seaside – it’s so boring.
The Great Genie of the Lamp: Oh, dear, I think I need another volunteer.

Reports from the Film Set
|
Read four reports from the film set. Then match each newspaper headline and the story.
1. A historical drama or a love story?
2. Who can pay for the gunpowder?
3. The rebellion on the set.
4. “The Wooden Sword” and the Golden Globe.
Manuela
Linda Pazuri is causing trouble again! The beautiful star playing the king’s daughter in
Mr. Fanussi’s film fell in love with Mark Dread, one of the three Red Knights. The
romance flourished until Miss Pazuri found out that two other knights were in love with
her, too. Now all three of them are chasing her on the set. Our reporter took a photo when
the unfortunate lovers suddenly saw their princess in the distance. Which Red Knight will
win Linda’s heart?
The Evening Express
The disagreement over the actor’s pay in Mr. Fanussi’s latest film has ended in a
rough fight. The actors, armed with spears, tried to force Mr. Zachary, the producer (also
acting in the film) to give them more money and reduce their working hours. The police
were called immediately and the rebellious actors were arrested.
The Film
Mr. Fanussi is working on “The Wooden Sword”, his fifth film set in medieval times.
The film has a complex plot and lots of battle scenes. The love scenes are absolutely
superb thanks to Linda Pazuri’s brilliant acting. The film has been nominated for a
Golden Globe Award. Our reporter found Mr. Fanussi in the middle of a battlefield. Look at
page 17 for an exclusive interview with the famous director.
The Economic News
“My new film may cost about 20 million dollars,” said Mr. Fanussi at a press
conference yesterday. The film has got some fantastic battle scenes. Mr. Zachary, the
producer, had to hire 50 cannons and different kinds of medieval weapons from the National
Museum. He still has to pay for hundreds of litres of red paint for the most bloody
scenes. When Fanussi asked him for 500 kilos of gunpowder, the annoyed producer said
“No”.

Sharing Personal Experience
|
Do the activities and compose stories about your personal experience.
Writer’s Tip:
In order to capture your reader’s attention, the beginning of your story must be
interesting and lively enough to make your reader want to keep reading. One way to do this
is to begin with an action.
Directions:
Revise each story beginning. Put your main character in the setting, and have the
character do something relevant to the story.
Example: One rainy day I went to the mall.
Revision: I splashed across the parking lot, yanked open the tall glass door, and,
dripping wet, stepped into the mall.
1. Hi. My name is Kate. This is a story about the time I went to the zoo.
Put Kate (main character) at the zoo (setting) doing something (action).
Revision: ______________________________
2. This is a story about the time I built a robot in my basement.
Put yourself (main character) in the basement (setting) doing something (action).
Revision: _______________
3. I will tell you about my adventure swimming at the lake.
Put yourself (main character) at the lake (setting) doing something (action).
Revision: _____________________________
