Это может быть и конкурс газет “Праздники и традиции Великобритании и Америки”, конкурс на лучшую открытку-валентинку, игры “Поле чудес”, “Звёздный час”, “Угадай мелодию”, конкурс на лучший перевод стихотворения (например, “То a false friend” by Thomas Wood или “My heart’s in the Highlands” by Robert Burns), конкурс на продолжение фразы “Love is...”, конкурс знатоков английского языка в форме КВН, “вечер английского детектива”, дискотека “Все звёзды к нам” (“All stars are our guests”, где учащиеся исполняют песни всемирно известных звёзд на английском языке).

Teacher: Our meeting today is devoted to “detective stories’’. If you look the term up in the dictionary you can find: “Detective is adventure prose which describes different kinds of crimes”. Actually, most people are fond of detective stories. I’m sure you know such detectives as Dupin from the stories by Edgar Рое and Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple by Agatha Christie. But I won’t be mistaken if I say that that the most famous and talented is Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle. By the way, Doyle considered all his stories about Sherlock Holmes short-lived. He tried to stop writing stories about Sherlock Holmes, but his readers forced him to continue.
Now we shall get acquainted with the most famous detective story writers. Just some facts from their biographies.

Agatha Christie

Pupil 1: Readers call Agatha Christie the “Queen of detective stories”. She once called herself the “sausage machine” for she produced about 60 detective novels, and her books went through reprint after reprint and were sold in the hundreds of millions of copies.
Agatha Christie was the second daughter of an Anglo-American marriage, and her father died when she was little. She did not attend school and was taught at home by her mother.
Having taken First Aid and Home Nursing Certificates, she worked in the Red Cross Hospital during the World War I. There she gained her good knowledge of poisons, which helped her later in her literary work.
Agatha Christie wrote about 100 works – as we have already said – about 60 detective stories, then, six psychological or romantic stories published under the name of Mary Westmacott, 19 volumes of short mystery stories, 14 plays based on detective stories, two works of non-fiction and a book of poems.

Teacher: Now you’ll see a funny scene. I am sure you’ll guess about our next detective story writer.

Teacher: As you have already guessed this time we’ll speak about Conan Doyle. Be attentive, because you’ll need to answer my questions!

Arthur Conan Doyle

Pupil 2: Arthur Conan Doyle was born in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. His father, Charles Doyle, was an artist and architect by profession, but he worked as a clerk in an office. The father died young and the Doyle family was very poor. Arthur’s mother was a very good story-teller and he remembered her fantastic stories all his life. And it helped him as a writer.
After finishing school Doyle became a student of the medical faculty in the University of Edinburgh. He began his medical practice in a small English town called Southsea, where he spent eight years. Here, in 1887, he published his first detective story “A Study in Scarlet” (“Этюд в багровых тонах”). Its main characters were Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson and they became the most popular characters of a great many of C. Doyle’s stories.
In 1891 Conan Doyle gave up his medical work and devoted all his time to his literary activity. Besides detective stories, Conan Doyle also wrote historical novels, war books and two fantastic stories “The Lost Word” (“Затерянный мир”) and “The Poisoned Belt” (“Отравленный пояс”).

Teacher: Now our questions!

1. Where was C. Doyle born?

2. What was his father?

3. What profession did he train for at the University?

4. Who was the main character of his detective stories?

5. What books besides detective stories did C. Doyle write?

Watch the scene from “Silver Blaze” by C. Doyle.

Teacher: Now we want to tell you some words about Edgar Allan

Edgar Allan Рое

Pupil 2: He was born in Boston. When he was two years old, he lost his parents and was brought up by his uncle. He was educated partly in England and party in the USA. He wrote poems and was a literary critic. But he is best remembered for his short stories. Edgar Рое had a great interest in unnatural things of one sort or another. His stories are full of mystery. Edgar Allan Рое is considered to be the founder of detective stories in American literature.
And now watch the scene from “The Stolen Letter” by E.

Teacher: The main accessories of any detective are a lens, a forceps, a pipe, a top hat and a stick. Now you’ll become detectives. I think every detective must possess the following features: He must be smart, observant, attentive, well-educated, broad-minded and quick-witted. For every right answer you’ll get a card. The person with the most cards is the best detective!
Now we’ll read some descriptions of different heroes. Try to guess who it is and name the author.

Teacher: Our next competition is called “Move your brains”(дана картинка). Look at the picture!

Two men found themselves in a cell. There was no door there. And the window was very high, near the ceiling, but it was opened. I should add, that one of the men was short and the other was tall. They decided to have the short man stand on the shoulders of the tall man, but he couldn’t reach the window. Just a couple of centimeters made a gap. They sat down on the floor, moved their brains and got out of the cell. How did they do it? Move your brains!

Teacher: Our next competition is called “Who is the quickest?” We’ll ask questions and you’ll answer them. If you give the right answer, you’ll get a card. But before your answer, you should raise your hand.

Teacher: Our next competition is called “Why?”. You’ll get a love letter. Read it and say why the father was glad, and his daughter was glad too.

The Love Letter

Once there was a boy who loved a girl very much. The girl’s father, however, did not like the boy and did not want their love to grow. The boy wanted to write the girl a love letter, but he was sure that the girl’s father would read it first. At last he wrote this letter to the girl.

The great love I said I have for you
Is gone, and I find my dislike for you
Increases every day. When I see you,
I do not even like the way you look,
The one thing I want to do is to
Look the other way. I never wanted to
marry you. Our last conversation
was very dull and in no way has
made me anxious to see you again.
You think only of yourself.
If we were married, I know that I would find
life very difficult, and I would have no
pleasure in living with you. I have a heart
to give, but it is not a heart
I want to give to you. No one is more
demanding or selfish than you, and less
able to care for me and be of help to me.
I sincerely want you to understand that
I speak the truth. You will do me a favor
if you consider this the end. Do not try
to answer this. Your letters are full of
things that do not interest me. You have no
true concern for me. Good-bye! Believe me,
I do not care for you. Please do not think
I am still ?our loving friend.

The girl’s father read the letter. He was pleased, and then gave the letter to his daughter.
The girl read the letter and was very happy. The boy still loved her!

  • Centra biblioteko estas granda.

  • Telefono estas aparato.

  • Traktoro estas masino.

  • La blanka kvadrato estas granda.

  • La nigra kvadrato estas malgranda.

Teacher: Give the Russian equivalents of the English proverbs.

2. While it is fine weather, mend your sail.

3. Better one small fish than an empty dish.

4. It is too late to lock the stable-door when the horse has been stolen.

5. As well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb.

7. Не that fears every bush must never go birding.

8. Don’t teach your grandmother to eat eggs.

9. Fear has long legs.

Detective”.
