ХОД УРОКА
Начало урока: приветствие, речевая
разминка, сообщение цели урока.
Teacher: Good morning, my dear students. I’m very glad to see
you. We’ve just finished to study the theme “The Noun”. Today we have a competition
lesson where you’ll show that you are real experts in this question.
There are many Kingdoms in the world of the English language but the two biggest are
Nounlandia and Verblandia. They are neighbours; and today we’re going to travel about
Nounlandia! You are welcome! Have a look at the map (see p. 37). There are some stops as
you see. You’ll have to do some tasks there. We’ve got two teams. What are your names?
I. The first stop is “BLITZ”.
Teacher: I’ll ask each team a number of questions. You’ll
have a point for each correct answer. If the team doesn’t know the answer the rival team
can try it and earn a point.
I team
1. How do most English words form the plural? (with the help of the
ending “-s”)
2. If the word ends in “-y” are there any changes to make the plural form? (consonant
+”y” = “ies”; baby; vowel + “y”= “s” tray)
3. Form and spell the plural form of the word “potato”? (potatoes)
4. What is the plural of the word “loaf”? (loaves)
5. Is the sentence correct: “Scissors is used to cut the jeans?” (no; “are”)
II team
1. How can the ending “s” be pronounced? ([s], [z], [iz])
2. Are there any changes if the word ends in “-ch”, “-sh”, “-s”, “-x”,
“-z”? (we add “-es”; watch, box, boss)
3. Form and spell the plural form of the word “radio”? (radios)
4. What is the plural of the word “chief”? (chiefs)
5. Is the sentence correct: “The police are investigating this case carefully?” (yes)
II. Pronunciation Stop
Teacher: You know how to read the ending “-s”. You’ve got
the cards with the transcription signs. I’ll pronounce a word in the singular and you
are to show the necessary card. You’ll have a point for each word pronounced correctly.
III. Captains’ Contest
Teacher: While learning any language you are supposed to be good
at spelling. You are future teachers and you should know how to correct mistakes. The next
contest is for the captains. Dear captains, come up here. I’ve got a special test for
you. The task is to correct the mistakes if there are any.

IV. Poets’ Corner
Now let’s see how successful you are at forming the plural form. You
are to read the poem and to fill in the missing plural forms. You’ll have 5 points if
you don’t make any mistakes.
The Arbitrary English Language
We’ll begin with box, and the plural is –,
But the plural of ox should be –, not oxes.
The one fowl is a goose, but two are called –
Yet the plural of mouse should never be meese.
You may find one mouse, or a whole nest of –,
But the plural of house is –, not hise.
If the plural of man is always called –,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?
The cow in the plural may be – or kine;
But a bow, if repeated, is never called bine;
And the plural of vow is –, never vine.
If I speak of a foot, and you show me your –,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are –,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?
If the singular is this and the plural is –,
Should the plural of kiss ever be nicknamed keese?
Then one may be that and three would be –,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is –, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren,
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his, him,
But imagine the feminine she, shis and shim!
So English, I think you all will agree,
Is the greatest language you ever did see.
