CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

Only Love Is Spoken Here…

Lesson Plan

I. Организационный момент

Teacher: Good morning dear guests and students! We are glad to invite you to our unusual lesson! It’s unusual because of the day. Why is it unusual? Do you know…? Yes, you are not mistaken. But the most important thing is you’ll listen to individuals who are keen on poetry, music and English. You are welcome.

II.

Teacher: Welcome to “Only love is spoken here” – a musical program presented by the school-leavers.
You won’t see any scenery – only love; no costumes – only love.
There isn’t any storyline – only love. So if you are bitter, pessimistic, angry, selfish – go outside!
Only love is spoken here!

Pupil 1: Love. L-O-V-E. Only four letters, but it’s a big word. A lot of people have their own ideas about what it means.

Pupil 2: Albert Schweitzer said, “As long as there are people in the world who are hungry, sick, lonely or living in fear, they are my responsibility. That is love”.

Pupil 3: Robert Frost said, “We love the things we love for what they are”.

Pupil 4: Someone once said, “Love is not getting, but giving – it is goodness, honor and peace.”

Pupil 5: We have a special day that’s set aside for friendship and love.

Pupil 6: Everybody knows what that day is!

Pupil 7: Of course! It’s St. Valentine’s Day!

Teacher: Love! Happiness! Beauty! There are not so many days in a year when we pronounce these pleasant words. Today, we have an excellent chance to plunge into the atmosphere of love and friendship, to take part in our lesson-concert on this special day. Happy St. Valentine’s Day! It’s here again, the day when boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, friends and classmates will exchange greetings, and confess their love.

Pupil: “Romeo and Juliet” is one of Shakespeare’s best plays. It is a tragedy, but it was written in the first period of his creative work. This play is full of love, youth and humanism. Rome and Juliet are in love with each other and love changed them: they became wiser and more beautiful.

Juliet:

And yet I wish but for the thing I have:
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.

Romeo:

O blessed, blessed night! I am afeard,
Being in night, all this is but a dream,
Too flattering-sweet to be substantial.

Juliet:

How cam’st thou hither, tell me, and wherefore?
The orchard walls are high and hard to climb,
And the place death, considering who thou art,
If any of my kinsmen find thee here.

Romeo:

With love’s light wings did I o’erperch these walls;
For stony limits cannot hold love out,
And what love can do that dares love attempt;
Therefore thy kinsmen are not stop to me.

Juliet: By whose direction found’st thou out this place?

Romeo:

By Love, that first did prompt me to inquire.
That music hath saw a goddess go;
My mistress when she walks treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

Teacher: People used to believe that all emotions are in the heart. In later years, they thought only the emotion of love was connected with the heart.

Pupil:

He deals the cards as a meditation
And those he plays never suspect,
He doesn’t play for the money he wins
He doesn’t play for respect.
He deals the cards to find the answer
The sacred geometry of chance,
The hidden law of a probable outcome
The numbers lead a dance.
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier,
I know that the clubs are weapons of war,
I know that diamonds mean money for this art,
But that’s not the shape of my heart.
He may play the jack of diamonds,
He may lay the queen of spades,
He may conceal a king in his hand,
While the memory of it fades.
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier,
I know that the clubs are weapons of war,
I know that diamonds mean money for this art,
But that’s not the shape of my heart.
And if I told that I loved you,
You’d maybe think there’s something wrong.
I’m not a man of too many faces,
The mask I wear is one.
Those who speak know nothing,
And find out to their cost,
Like those who curse their luck in too many places,
And those who fear are lost.
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier,
I know that the clubs are weapons of war,
I know that diamonds mean money for this art,
But that’s not the shape of my heart.
Love is a wonderful
Thing though it’s sad.
Love makes you happy
And goes to you head.
Love keeps you lively
When others are down.
Love keeps you smiling
No trace of a frown.
Love keeps you warm
On a cold winter’s night.
Love makes you daydream
Make things seem alright.
Love never ends.
Until those dreaded words
“Let’s still be friends.”

Teacher: Love is a really fascinating feeling, this is how

Burns speaks of it:

Pupil:

Red, Red Rose
(by Robert Burns)

O, my love is like red, red rose,
That’s newly sprung in June.
O, my love is like the melody,
That’s sweetly played in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonny lass,
So deep in love am I,
And I will love thee still, my dear,
Till all the seas go dry.
Till all the seas go dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt with the sun!
And I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands of life shall run.
And fare thee well, my only love.
And fare thee well a while!
And I will come again, my love,
Though it were ten thousand mile!

(Translations were done by the 11th formers.)

Pupil 1:

Pupil 2:

Pupil: And this is how one can confess one’s love with Valentines. Look! They were made by our students. Aren’t they beautiful? … Oh, yes. They are as beautiful as daises. So are love poems.

Teacher: The greatest poet of love W. Shakespeare wrote a lot of sonnets devoted to this great feeling. P1 will recite one of them. P2 will recite the translation. The translation was made by Marshak.

Pupil 1:

Sonnet

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun:
Coral is far more red then her lips’ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask’s red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight.
Than in her breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks,
treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

Pupil 2:

Teacher: Love makes the world go round. Earth is the right place to love and be loved.

Song “Secret” (P1; P2)

Things haven’t been the same,
Since you came into my life.
You found a way to touch my soul,
And I’m never, ever, ever,
Gonna let it go.
Happiness lies in your own hand.
It took me much too long to understand,
How it could be
Until you shared your decret with me.
Chorus:
Mmm-mmm
Something’s comin’ over
Mmm-mmm something’s
Comin’ over
Mmm-mmm something’s comin’ over me
My baby’s got a secret.
You gave me back the paradise
That I thought I lost for good.
You helped me find the reason why,
It took me by surprise that you understood
You knew all along
What I never wanted to say.
Until I learned to love myself,
I was never ever lovin’ anybody else.
Happiness lies in your own hand
It took me much too long to understand,
How it could be
Until you shared your
Secret with me.
Chorus.

Teacher: There are a lot of poems about love. Let’s listen to one of them.

Pupil:

Roses red, and roses white
Plucked I for my love’s delight.
She would none of my great poses –
Bade me gather her blue roses.
Half the world I wandered through
Seeking where such flowers grew.
Half the world upon my quests
Answered but with laugh and jests.
It may be beyond the grave
She will find what she will have:
Oh, it was an idle quest –
Roses red, and white are best.

Teacher: When we love each other we don’t notice anybody or anything, so in the song “Only You!” by Elvis Presley.

Pupil 3:

Only You

Only you can make all this world seem right,
Only you can make the darkness bright,
Only you, and you alone
Can fill me like you do
And fill my heart with love for only you.
Only you can make all this change in me,
For it’s true
You are my destiny.
When you hold my hand, I understand
The magic that you do,
You’re my dream come true,
My one and only you.
Only you can do make all this change in me,
For it’s true
You are my destiny.
When you hold my hand, I understand
The magic that you do,
You’re my dream come true,
My one and only you.

Teacher: St. Valentine’s Day is one of the popular holidays in America, Great Britain and throughout all of Europe.

Pupil 1: If you go to Rome
You’ll see the Coliseum.
If you go to London
May be you’ll see the Queen.
If you stay with me
You won’t see anything.
But you’ll be very happy
That’s for sure.

Pupil 2: If you climb the mountains
You’ll be above the noisy crowds.
If you catch a jet plane
You’ll be above the clouds.
If you stay with me
You won’t see anything.
But you’ll be very happy
That’s for sure.

Pupil 1: If you leave me now
I’ll be sad and lonely.
If you walk away
I’ll search around for you.
If it takes a year
I’ll find you, my darling.
And you’ll be very happy
That’s for sure.

Pupil 2: If I make some
Will you change your mind?
If I ask you nicely
Will you make a cup of tea?
Then I’ll be very happy
That’s for sure.

Teacher: Thank you! We enjoyed your reciting the poem. Love always makes wonders. We can’t live, smile, and breathe without our beloved.

The Song “Without You”

No I can’t forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way the story goes.
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows.
Yes it shows.
No I can’t forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrow
When I had you there
But then I let you go.
And now it’s only fair
That I should let you know
What you should know.
I can’t live, if living is without you
I can’t give, I can’t give anymore
I can’t live, if living without you
I can’t give, I can’t give anymore.
Well I can’t forget this evening
Or your face as your were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way the story goes.
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows.
Yes it shows.

Teacher: When you love, everything seems beautiful: the people you meet, the trees and the flowers, and the sun shines brighter than usual, that’s for sure.

Pupil: There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,

There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is a society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar;
I love not man less, but Nature more.
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal.

Teacher: Love is life is living it’s very special all my love…

All students who participate in the party are singing the song “Yesterday” and the audience’s helping.

Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly,
I’m not half the man I used to be,
There’s a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why she had to go I don’t know, she wouldn’t say,
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Why she had to go I don’t know, she wouldn’t say
I said something wrong. Now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday,
Mm mm mm mm mm mm mm mm.

Teacher: Have you enjoyed our program? Congratulations to you and remember: “Love makes the world go round”, that for sure.

It makes you feel
It can’t be taught,
Bargained or bought.
Love can really make you feel
That you’re a better person.
And when you’re in love,
You really know you are.

Dear boys and girls, teachers and guests. Love and be loved.
