Letter Auction
Focus: to revise English sounds and letters
Number of players: the whole class
Time: 3-5 minutes
Material: sets of cards with transcription symbols on them
Instructions: Hand out the cards with transcription symbols
written on them. Pronounce the letters and the students should show the letter they hear.
The person who is first to respond receives a token (such tokens are to be made
beforehand). If several symbols correspond to the letter (according to reading rules), the
winner is the person who shows as many correct cards as possible.
Arrange the Alphabet
Focus: to revise the alphabet and practise pronouncing English
sounds
Number of players: 1 (Individual work)
Time: 5 minutes
Material: sets of cards with alphabet letters on them
Instructions: Each student should have a letter kit (26 4x6
cards with letters on them) made at home. Cards should be put down on the table face up in
random order. The task is to arrange them in alphabetical order as quickly as possible.
The winner is the first person to complete the task.
Picture Squares
Focus: to practise numbers 1-10 and letters A-J
Number of players: the whole class
Time: 3-5 minutes
Material: copies with 10x10 box grid
Instructions: Make copies for each student to have a 10x10 box
square. Write letters A-J across the top and numbers 1-10 down the side of each box.
Give each student a box grid. Tell them you are going to call out a number and a letter.
When they hear the letter they should look along the top of the box square and when they
hear the number they should look down the side. They find the square where the two
intersect. When they have found the square they should colour it. Call out the numbers and
letters in turn. Finally, ask the students to compare their pictures in pairs and tell
what they think the picture is.
