The Fox and the Grapes

a) Put in the verb “to be” (“am”, “is”, “are”)

Tom and Bill come to a small hotel and take a room in which there ______ two beds. In the next room there ______ two young men, who invite Tom and Bill for a drink. At night Tom and Bill go back to their room. It ______ dark in the corridor, and there ______ no light in their room. By mistake they go into one bed. Soon Tom says: “You know, Bill, I think that there ______ a man in my bed.” Bill answers, “You know, Tom, there ______ a man in my bed, too! His feet ______ on my pillow.” “What ______ you going to do?”, asks Bill. Tom answers: “I ______ going to push him to the floor.” Bill says, “I ______ going to do the same.” They begin to fight, and after some time Tom says, “You know, Bill, I ______ on the floor now. I think my man ______ very strong. And how ______ you?” Bill answers: “I ______ on the floor, too. I think my man ______ stronger than I ______” Tom says, “It ______ a very strange hotel!”

b) Answer the questions about the story above

Конструкция с there обозначает нахождение какого-то предмета в каком-то месте, например: There is a table in the room. Конструкция с It обозначает природные явления: It often rains in autumn; It is cold here; It is five o’clock; It is morning already.

a) Choose the form of the verb in the Present Tense

The Dog and the Bone

There (to be) ______ a dog in the street who (to have) ______ a big bone in his teeth. The dog (to be) ______ very happy that he ______ a bone. He goes to a small river which (to have) ______ a bridge over it. The dog goes along the bridge, and then he looks down into the water. He sees himself in the water, but he thinks that there (to be)______ another dog in the river, who (to have) ______ another big bone. The dog wants to get the bone which the other dog (to have) ______ He jumps down into the river, and in the end he (to have) ______ no bones at all, because his bone (to be) ______ now at the bottom of the river.

b) Give a short answer using “to be” or “to have” according to the model:

Ex. 8. Open the brackets. Retell the joke
