ANN AND MARY

Ann’s Mum gives her a free hand in choosing her clothes. Her Mum thinks that Ann can spend money wisely. She can buy things by herself. But Ann likes to do her shopping with Mum. So when Ann needs clothes they go to the shop together.

Mary and her Mum always have arguments about choosing things. Mary’s not practical. She doesn’t think twice before buying this or that thing. So Mary’s Mum doesn’t give her a free hand in buying clothes. Mary’s Mum thinks it’s silly to spend money on whatever catches her eye.

2. Who can spend money wisely?

3. Who can’t buy things by herself?

4. Who buys whatever comes?

II. Read the text about Michael.

Some weeks before Christmas shops are very busy. People buy presents for their relatives and friends. When I buy presents I always ask myself “Would he or she like to have this thing? Will he or she like my present?” Choosing presents is a difficult business for me. I never buy whatever catches my eye. I think twice and try to find reasons before buying this or that. This year I’ve bought a saucepan for Granny. Her old one is too small for our family. I’ve bought a new tie for Granddad. His old one isn’t trendy at all. I’ve bought a very beautiful houseplant for Mum and a nice fish for Dad’s aquarium. My little sister Jane likes watching cartoons. So I’ve bought a cassette with her favourite ones. All these presents are from the heart.

True or False?

1. There are a lot of people in the shops before Christmas.

2. People buy presents for nearest and dearest.

3. Choosing presents is a hard business for Michael.

4. He buys whatever catches his eye.

– I hate shopping. I can never choose what I really want.

– Do you? I don’t. Shopping is my favourite pastime.

– I don’t do shopping by myself.

– Neither do I. I can buy very few things alone. CDs or sweets. Mum buys other things for me.

– I’d like to cook borsch for dinner.

– Oh, we’ve only got few vegetables. Shall I go to the greengrocer’s?

– Thank you. There’s a shopping list.

– Can I help you?

– Yes, please. I’m looking for a book.

– What kind of book would you like?

– For my brother. He is six. He likes fairy tales with pictures.

– What about this one?

– Grimm’s Fairy Tales? It’s just what I wanted. I’ll take it.

– Can you buy things by yourself?

– I think I can, but Mum thinks differently.

– Why?

– She says I’m too young. She allows me to buy bread, dairy products and some other food which don’t cost much.

– Let’s go to the market stalls.

– Why?

– For vegetables and fruits.

– I’m afraid I can’t. Besides, we’ve already got a lot.

– How do you spend your pocket money?

– I can’t spend money wisely. I always buy things that I can do without.

– So do I. I spend my pocket money on computer games, CDs, cassettes.

– Mum, I think I need a new parka.

– Why?

– My old one is too small.

– You are right.

– Sure. Our department store sells lots of trendy parkas. We’ll choose the best one.
