A, a [ei] nWhat do we know about letters? Everybody is sure to answer that words are made of letters. But can letters become words? Yes, they can and very easily. There are a lot of interesting set-phrases where letters have their own independent meanings.

an A in maths – “отлично” по математике
straight Аs – круглое “отлично”
3. первый номер по порядку
company A in an infantry battalion – первая рота пехотного батальона

Divide students into two teams.
Ask the students of each team to write expressions with A, B, C, D in the table. When both of the teams are ready, ask them to exchange the cards and to translate the expressions into Russian.
Task 2.
Read the following story to the students and ask them to write down all “letter set-phrases” and explain their meanings.
Ask the students to continue the story in writing. Then have a competition for the following nominations:
– who managed to use the greatest number of “letter set-phrases”
– whose story is the longest
– whose continuation is the most unexpected.
Once upon a time there lived Mr. X and Mr. Y. Mr. X was very rich. His pockets were stuffed with C-notes. He has never ever ever been short of L. s. d. And he was very clever, too. When he was a schoolboy he got only As. When he became a lawyer he learnt all the laws from A to Z. The only problem he had was his funny last name. All his friends called him В flat. Mr. X was very short.
And Mr. Y was just the opposite. ______________________

Task 3.
Try to write your class “ABC”, “FHG” or “XYZ”. Distribute different letters among the students and ask them to find in the dictionary as many set expressions with these letters as they can. Let them share their knowledge and then play the charade game: The students are divided into two teams. The members of team 1 whisper a “letter set-phrase” to a member of the second team. He dramatizes this expression with pantomime and his team has to guess it.
